Preventing Burglaries: Home Security Expert Discusses Ways To Keep Your Home Safe

A professional home security expert spoke to FOX 11 about ways to secure your home and best prevent break-ins.

A professional home security expert spoke to FOX 11 about ways to secure your home and best prevent break-ins.

Jeff Zisner, President and CEO of Aegis Security and Investigations, conducted a home appraisal of a home in the San Fernando Valley on Tuesday.

“Conducting a home appraisal with a good quality, professional security expert can probably save you money by simply avoiding something happening and it will cost you less than a deductible,” said Zisner.

Zisner said ratings start out there.

“We start with the perimeter and work our way up to interiors, closets and safes, and it goes as deep as looking at insurance policies,” he said.

He pointed out some important factors in the appearance of a house.

“Having good fences, good locks, defensible boundaries on the foliage, it all helps a lot, but if we can have cameras, alarms and censors that can tell when these boundaries are triggering, intercepting them, then we can stop. ” The first thing you need to do is make a security plan, make sure you set your alarm, make sure you check your camera system, but also use these systems regularly so that you are familiar with how they work, “said Zisner .

Zisner said foliage shouldn’t be easy to walk on and should be used as a deterrent for burglars. He said outdoor lighting is also important.

“This home [in the San Fernando Valley] Lacks a lot of outside lighting. If I were to do a review on this house tonight I would ask for lights on at least two of those corners and possibly above the door as well, and those lights need to be motion activated and used with censors to see if they are light or dark “, he said.

He said ADT signs in the yard, along with other tactics like cameras and motion censorship, could help.

“These signs are obviously helpful. You let the bad guy know that this house is protected by something, ”he said.

He said to prevent mail theft, mailboxes should be secured. He said homeowners can also give delivery drivers instructions on where to drop a package.
