How rich, varied, vibrant, neon-bright, and ultra-rad is the enduring and obsessive culture of the San Fernando Valley?
You could spend a semester immersing yourself in the plethora of pop culture shoutouts, cinematic posts, and playful hymns of praise the tubular area has to offer, which, overall, would be a mighty good way to spend a semester.
From a bunch of funky films (hey, “Valley Girl”) to a number of hits (hey, “Valley Girl”), to other hits (“Free Fallin”, a classic) to bigger films (“Boogie Nights,” so famous), the valley lives in our imagination.
In our imagination and also in front of our admiring eyes thanks to the Valley Relics Museum and the many places of community importance that continue to exist colorfully, thrive and bond with loyal fans.
And helping SFV lovers support their favorite boulevards, mid-century houses, art theaters and the best restaurants? There is the 818 day which is of course August 18 or August 18 if you prefer.
Like 626 Day in Pasadena and 808 Day in Ventura, 818 Day pays homage to the date, the area’s iconic area code and, you bet, the valley’s big-big vibe.
And a big-big vibe needs a vibrant visual component, which the San Fernando Valley is grateful for at a special celebration at Westfield Fashion Square Mall on Wednesday, August 18.
A new flag of the San Fernando Valley, brought together as part of the Valley-loving partnership of My Valley Pass, The Valley Relics Museum, and Westfield Fashion Square, will be unveiled at the evening ceremony that starts at 6 a.m. and around you guessed it, 8:18 pm (but of course).
Other events will be hilariously Valley-style, such as the mall’s fountain transformation, a fun tribute to the mall’s home, and the presence of several local pop-up vendors.
A DJ should be there, because the Valley’s soundtrack is always rock and biscuits with a certain 818 sweetness.
“The San Fernando Valley is a place like no other. So much history and accomplishments have come from this area. 818 Day was created to allow you to think and take a moment to discover new things,” said Oscar Urrutia of My Valley Pass.
“From visiting a local museum to trying a new dish at a local restaurant. August 18th will be a day for us to come together and celebrate the place we call home.”
