George Lucas’ stunning new museum is taking shape in LA’s Exposition Park

This isn’t a giant spaceship taking shape next to the Natural History Museum and Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles’ Exposition Park. It’s a testament to the power of history.

Founded by George Lucas and his wife Mellody Hobson, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art hopes to inspire current and future generations through the art of visual storytelling.

The museum will present various exhibitions and visual storytelling, says the founder. Public programs allow people to explore different forms of storytelling.

Star Wars creator George Lucas and his team announced Tuesday, January 10, 2017 that they have chosen Los Angeles over San Francisco as the location of the museum that will feature his work. After what organizers called an extremely difficult decision, they announced on Tuesday that the museum will be built in Los Angeles’ Exposition Park, where it will sit alongside other more traditional museums. The 300,000 square foot structure, designed by architect Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, will feature 100,000 square feet of gallery space, two theaters, restaurants, retail and events space.

Yansong’s futuristic design features transparent tube elevator shafts that transport visitors through the curved white ceiling in the lobby area. In addition to the museum, the development will include an 11-hectare park.

When the otherworldly museum opens in 2023, at least in part of the museum, valley dwellers could feel like they never left home.

Lucas acquired the archival materials from the development and execution of Judith F. Baca’s 800-foot mural The History of California, popularly known as The Great Wall of Los Angeles, which runs along Coldwater Canyon Avenue in the San Fernando Valley and will most likely be on display in the museum.

Creator of the popular Star Wars franchise, Lucas is one of the world’s most popular directors, as well as a producer, screenwriter and entrepreneur.

Lucas also directed American Graffiti, created the Indiana Jones franchise, and founded Lucasfilm, Lucasfilm Games, and Industrial Light & Magic.
