Gated Los Angeles Estate Built by Magic Johnson in 1980s Asks $14.5 Million

A sunny six-bedroom mansion that NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson built in 1981 in Moraga Estates, a gated enclave in the upscale Bel Air section of Los Angeles, came on the market Tuesday asking $14.5 million.

At more than 10,000 square feet, the home was designed to fit the needs of Mr. Johnson, the legendary Los Angeles Lakers point guard and activist, according to marketing materials from Compass agent Nancy Ellin, who is both the seller and the listing agent.

As such, the home features a sizable indoor basketball court and locker room, complete with signatures still on the wall from “many notable NBA players,” according to the listing. Guests can watch games on the court through glass windows in an upper level media room.

Mr Johnson lived there until 1990, according to representatives from Compass. Ms. Ellin purchased the property for $4.4 million in 2004.

Built for hosting, the house also boasts an expansive game room with wood beamed ceilings, a wet bar and a separate entrance into the backyard. Lined with hedges “for total privacy,” marketing materials note, the backyard features grass lawns as well as multiple brick patios, an in-ground pool, a built-in barbecue and a fire pit, all overlooked by the surrounding canyons.

In the front of the home, a brick pathway leads to the main entrance and dramatic foyer, which is framed by high ceilings and a winding staircase, photos show. A formal dining room with custom built-ins is located off the foyer, and a formal living room with a wood-burning fireplace opens into a spacious family family room, also with a wood-burning fireplace as well as a bar and “Moroccan- inspired seating rotunda.” The family room opens directly into the backyard area via French doors.

A primary bedroom suite boasts its own sitting area and fireplace, as well as a balcony, custom walk-in closets, and a window-lined bathroom with a steam shower and soaking tub.

“This home is one of the most private properties in Moraga Estates,” Ms. Ellin said in an emailed statement. “Following a complete renovation, it now has top-of-the-line appliances, marble, custom cabinets and Moroccan/Spanish design elements that were inspired from our travels.”

“It is a true entertainer’s haven and an incredibly special home,” Ms. Ellin added.
