Long-time resident of the Valley Center, Charles Edward Kitterman, passed away on August 17, 2021. He was 81 years old.
Born on August 2, 1940, Mr. Kitterman grew up in the San Fernando Valley, California, the youngest of 10 children of Charles E. Kitterman and Bernetta Kennedy. He married April Jean LaVine in 1959 and started a family and a roofing business in Sylmar, California.
The move to Valley Center came after the 1971 earthquake that irreparably damaged their existing home. Fortunately, shortly before these events, the family had bought a lot in Valley Center and built a new home here a year later.
Mr. Kitterman founded the Kitterman Roofing Company at Valley Center and was known as a hard worker who worked hard. Many of his business and social friends knew they always had a friend to help. That was part of his hard work.
His involvement in community organizations includes the Optimist Club, youth sports and mentoring programs. He spent many hours building a new baseball field to replace the one that closed after the new middle school was built in 1973. He was also involved in the first Pop Warner football program at Valley Center and built the volunteer fire department.
Mr. Kitterman leaves his two daughters, Wendy and Julie, and Charles B. his son. He also leaves three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A family reunion will take place at a later date. Friends and acquaintances will be informed via a separate meeting at the beginning of November.
