Car-to-car shootout kills father and injures sons

A man was killed and his two sons injured on Saturday afternoon following a car-to-car shot on Freeway 60 in Hacienda Heights, authorities said.

California Highway Patrol officials responded at 12:28 p.m. to a report of an accident on Freeway 60, east of Crossroads Parkway. When the officers arrived, they found a white Chevrolet Avalanche with extensive collision damage.

Inside the avalanche they found three passengers: a grown man and two men aged 13 and 16. It was then that officials learned that 35-year-old Luis Mendoza from La Puente had been shot, according to California Highway patrol.

Witnesses told officers they saw the passenger of a car driving in the car pool lane point a gun at Mendoza’s truck and fire multiple shots, officials said. Mendoza lost control of his truck and collided with a white Kia before hitting the concrete retaining wall.

Mendoza and his two sons were taken to Los Angeles County’s USC Medical Center. Mendoza was pronounced dead in the hospital. His sons suffered life-threatening injuries, CHP officials said.

The driver of the Kia was not injured.

California Highway Patrol investigators said it was unknown whether the gunfire was related to traffic anger. They encourage anyone who may have footage or witnessed the shooting to call them at (323) 644-9550.
