The Orange County Water District and the Serrano Water District (Serrano) have begun operating one of Orange County’s first treatment plants to remove per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from local well water. The new facility is among 35 PFAS treatment facilities being designed and constructed in Orange County over the next two years. Due to their many years of use, PFAS are being detected in water sources throughout the United States, including the Orange County Groundwater Basin, which supplies 77 percent of the water supply to 2.5 million people in north and central Orange County.

A bill introduced Tuesday by Assemblymember Luz Rivas (D-San Fernando Valley) could better protect California’s coastline from deep sea mining – one method manufacturers are exploring to source raw materials for burgeoning clean energy industries. Manufacturers say they will need such materials to build batteries and chips for electronics and electric vehicles. But scientists and ocean advocates argue deep sea mining is too experimental and poses grave risks to rare and protected species that make a home in the Pacific Ocean. Assembly Bill 1832, coauthored by Assemblymember Mark Stone and Senator John Laird, could proactively prohibit mining from taking place in some 2,500 square miles of ocean waters off the California coast that are not currently protected.

In an experiment a decade in the making, biologists are releasing hatchery salmon onto flooded Northern California rice fields, seeking to replenish endangered fish species while simultaneously benefiting the farmers’ business model. Though the experiment has involved placing salmon on small parcels before, this winter marks the first time it has been tried on a large scale on a working rice farm. In recent years, biologists discovered that as rice straw decomposes in flooded fields, it creates a broth rich in fish food. University of California Davis researchers have joined the California Rice Commission, the conservation group California Trout, and the US Department of Agriculture on the project.

Kinder Morgan announced on Monday that it will build a renewable diesel hub in Southern California. The company said the hub will be the first of its kind in the nation to transport batches of renewable diesel by pipeline. The project is designed to keep the diesel separate from other products during transport so that customers do not lose access to California renewable tax credits, including the Low Carbon Fuel Standard credits. Multiple refiners, including Chevron and Phillips 66, are converting units at their California facilities to produce more renewable diesel fuel.
