West LA Commons is expected to include over 900 residential units in addition to retail and community office buildings

A new development from the West LA Civic Center will include over 900 residential units, retail and communal office space.
The unused West LA Civic Center will be the site of a new development called West LA Commons, which, according to the project’s website, “has fair housing options for a mix of household incomes, dynamic and engaging commercial space, new and revitalized community uses, ample public open space and robust , integrative community programs. ”
At a recent meeting, LA District Leader Sheila Kuehl and LA City Councilor Mike Bonin shared details about the project and a community input process for locals to share their thoughts on the proposal.
The project’s website states that the West LA Commons are “proposing a total of 926 residential units, including nearly 500 market-priced homes and more than 430 affordable, improved-service homes. The affordable housing is intended to help families, senior citizens and the homeless. The total number of affordable housing units far exceeds the affordable requirement of 30% sought in the application or the proposals.
The commercial space will include “more than 40,000 square meters of retail and catering space for the neighborhood. The commercial program will extend the pedestrian corridor of Santa Monica Boulevard and connect the site’s core uses with the neighborhood. In this way, West LA Commons becomes the transformed heart of the area, connecting those who live, work and play in the area with each other and with the neighborhoods of West Los Angeles. Commercial tenants will be announced as soon as the agreements are formalized. “
There will be a 73,400 square meter municipal office building as well as retail and catering space. The Felicia Mahood Community Center is being converted into a senior community center. The plaza and bandstand will continue to host flexible outdoor events such as movie nights, yoga classes, farmers’ markets, art programs and street parties. The proposal retains 118,000 square feet of open space for community use in addition to the outdoor areas reserved for events.
The design team consists of three companies, KoningEizenberg Architecture, OLIN and AC Martin and is developed by AvalonBay Communities and Abode Communities.
Supervisor Kuehl and Councilor Bonin stated that community members will have a number of different options to provide input and feedback on development to project managers through community meetings, design charrettes and town hall meetings. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2023 and is expected to be completed in 2028.
