Best Nursing Homes in Santa Monica: Ratings Published for 2022

SANTA MONICA, CA – The past two years have proven to be a difficult time for nursing homes in California. While many facilities continue to face an ongoing battle against the coronavirus, families in Santa Monica are likely still turning to nursing homes for short- or long-term care for their loved ones.

According to the US News & World Report, which published its list of the best nursing homes for 2021-22 on Tuesday, one in ten Americans over the age of 85 is in nursing homes. Almost a third of older Americans spend the last few months of their lives in a nursing home.

To help families choose the right nursing home, US News rated more than 15,000 nursing homes that serve 1.1 million people in the United States

This year’s list rated 11 facilities in Santa Monica and a total of 1,184 in California.

To compile rankings, US News analyzed available public data on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The researchers examined several outcomes, including the COVID-19 vaccination requirements for residents and staff, flu and pneumonia vaccination rates, and infection control violations, which are listed in the residents’ safety summary.

A care facility’s COVID-19 vaccination rate played a key role in the overall rating, according to US News. Homes with staff vaccination coverage of less than 75 percent were not seen as leading institutions. For this reason, at the time the list was published, a significant percentage of short- and long-term care programs that would otherwise have been rated as “high performing” were downgraded.

The ratings were based on publicly available data from July 2021, with additional COVID-19 vaccination data publicly available from October 2021.

Each facility was then rated on the quality of long-term and short-term care. The ratings range from very good to below average. The facilities were also given an overall rating of very good to below average.

Out of more than 13,100 nursing homes rated for long-term care, 1,063 were rated as performing. Approximately 13,500 facilities received a short-term rating, of which only 1,651 apartments received a high-performance rating.
