The COVID-19 pandemic drastically affected lives and businesses across the world, including local animal shelters such as the Santa Monica Animal Shelter. The beginning of the pandemic saw an increase in interest regarding pet adoptions. However, as restrictions ease and many return to work, public concern for pet surrenders has grown. Reports bolstering these false claims have only further fueled the fire. Meanwhile, most remain unaware of the real crisis facing the Santa Monica Animal Shelter: recent city-wide budget cuts.
We spoke with Lead Animal Control Officer Martin Hernandez who explained the severity of these budget cuts, including the loss of over half of their employees, many of whom directly cared for the animals. According to Hernandez, “Not having the dedicated staff to care for the animals on a daily basis means that our field officers, we’re all now taking care of the animals and trying to provide good service out in the field, and that’s been the biggest challenge.”
The shelter is currently accepting donations such as blankets, towels, and toys for the animals. Members of the community can also help through volunteer work at the shelter. Those interested may contact the the Santa Monica Animal Shelter directly for more information on how they can get involved.
