Jacqueline Avant’s alleged murderer has failed the legal system, says Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon

The alleged killer of Jacqueline Avant, the music manager’s wife and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Clarence Avant, was thwarted by a badass approach that focused only on incarceration rather than the causes of crime, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon announced.

Aariel Maynor is charged with murder, attempted murder, and burglary, and is a felon in possession of a gun in connection with the alleged December 1 murder at Avant’s Beverly Hills home and a botched break-in into a second home involving the police claims he accidentally shot himself in the foot.

Court records show Maynor, 29, was on parole at the time of the murder and has an extensive criminal record. He pleaded guilty to robbery in 2013 and was sentenced to five years in prison. He advocated no appeal against an incident of domestic violence in July 2013 and was convicted of aggravated theft in 2010.

He was released on parole in July 2018 but sentenced to four years in prison for robbery with extensions as a previously convicted felon in November of that year. He was released on September 1st.

“As far as we can see, he has never received any meaningful intervention that would have helped him change his life,” Gascon told reporters on Wednesday. “One who would have prevented the terrible tragedy.”

The remarks came as the chief prosecutor defended his policies amid a second recall and criticism that his office is soft on crime.

After a minute’s silence for Avant, 81, Gascon discovered that Maynor was found at the site of the second robbery with an AR-15 rifle, according to police.

“I am mad at a system that will allow a troubled young man with a proven track record of violent behavior to cycle in and out of prison for access to a military-style AR-15 with little or no interference . ” Gun and go out there and kill Jacqueline Avant, “he said.
