Balance the Dish – Santa Monica Daily Press

About the editor:

At the moment, thanks to a deliberate, decades-long takeover of the country’s highest court, the Supreme Court has a 6-3 partisan-rights super majority. We saw the climax of that acquisition in 2018 and 2020 when Trump and Mitch McConnell used a filibuster exception to appoint two extreme partisan judges. Now Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett have lifetime court appointments.

But it is possible to reverse this damage. The judicial bill would add four seats and restore the balance to the Supreme Court. It is the solution we need to move away from partisan decisions that could weaken gun safety laws, further restrict a pregnant person’s right to vote and sabotage health care reform. And it has been done before. In fact, Congress has resized the Supreme Court seven times in our nation’s history. It’s time to do it again.

I call on Congress to pass the 2021 Justice Bill to ensure we protect our fundamental rights and now restore the balance to our courts.
