5 Outdoor Activities Thanksgiving Weekend in Ventura County

1. Catch Santa Claus coming in

Watch Santa Claus dive into Janss Marketplace in Thousand Oaks on Friday.

Santa Claus plans to parachute to the mall’s Jingle Bell Jump around noon. He’s supposed to land in front of Sharky’s. The mall says the best vantage point is around the main fountain.

From 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., further children’s activities and live music are planned. Free parking is available at the mall at 275 N. Moorpark Road. More information: https://www.janssmarketplace.com/.

2. Visit the animals under disco lights

The “Wild Lights & Disco Nights” of the Moorpark College Americas Teaching Zoo offer groovy melodies and an interactive wall of light on Friday. See the lion Ira under a canopy of lights.

The event takes place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 6 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. at Campusstraße 7075. Entry is $ 11 for those over 13 and $ 9 for children 3 to 12 years old. More information: https://zoo.moorparkcollege.edu/holiday-lights/.

Can’t make it this weekend? The light show continues in December.

3. Brush up on American filmmaking

Take a guided tour of a film ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area for a behind-the-scenes look at Hollywood filmmaking.

A western town on Paramount Ranch was badly hit by the Woolsey Fire in 2018. But the park says the scenery is the real star, and it allows filmmakers to create locations from around the world.

The two-hour hike begins at 9:30 am on Saturday at Paramount Ranch, 2903 Cornell Road in Agoura Hills. It’s limited to 25 people, however, so register in advance by going to the “Movie and American Landscapes” calendar entry at https://www.nps.gov/samo/planyourvisit/calendar.htm.

The park recommends bringing a hat, sunscreen, water, and hiking or walking shoes. If you have any questions, please contact the Santa Monica Mountains Interagency Visitor Center at (805) 370-2301.

4. Stroll through a farmers market

Take an alfresco stroll at The Collection Saturday Farmers Market from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Oxnard.

Check out the fruit and vegetable stalls at The Collection in RiverPark. The weekly Saturday market takes place on Collection Boulevard opposite the Annex Food Hall. More information: http://thecollectionrp.com/connect.

5. Encourage body surfers

This year’s Ventura Bodysurfing Classic takes place on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Watch the competition on the waves at South Jetty Beach in Ventura Harbor on Spinnaker Drive. Visit southjettyswells.com/current-event for more information.

Stay at Ventura Harbor Village and listen to live music. Brandi Rose is expected to perform on the Seaside Promenade Stage from 12pm to 3pm.

Cheri Carlson covers the environment for the Ventura County Star. You can reach them at [email protected] or 805-437-0260.
