10K square-foot “Cardboard City” is coming to downtown Santa Monica

SANTA MONICA, CA – This summer, Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade will take on a new look with the Cardboard City temporary expansion, a dynamic pop-up art installation with exhibits and hands-on activities.

The pop-up is a collaboration between the City of Santa Monica, Starpoint Properties and the reDiscover Center and will run from July 8th to August 29th.

The 10,000 square meter installation will be equipped with cardboard museum exhibitions, works by artists-in-residence, free activities for children and adults and creativity courses for a surcharge.

Classes are designed to support up to 1,500 students aged 8 and over. The entire Cardboard City should meanwhile be available for private day and evening events for up to 200 people, according to a statement.

In addition to launching Cardboard City, reDiscover also announced a partnership with PS Arts, a nonprofit arts agency, to develop a 10-week curriculum for fourth and fifth grade students in LA County.

The curriculum will teach students the art and science between cardboard engineering.

reDiscover announced that it is also partnering with Makedo to provide free creative cardboard tools to attendees and partner schools across LA County.

Cardboard City opens on July 8th at 12:00 PM and is open every Thursday through Sunday from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM

A grand opening will be celebrated at noon on July 8th at 1231 Third St. Promenade in Santa Monica.
