A private beach in Malibu: It is very rare in California for a beach hotel to own the land on which it is located. However, the Malibu Beach Inn is exactly that hotel. The property is located on Carbon Beach in Malibu (a beach often referred to as “Billionaire’s Beach” because of the number of wealthy individuals who have homes on this stretch of sand) in a natural bay with minimal access to those outside Malibu allows the property boundary of the hotel. This allows guests to relax largely undisturbed on the hotel’s Italian sun loungers, while other beach hotels sit on public beaches.

Wine according to your taste: The CBC Restaurant (the eponymous acronym for Carbon Beach Club) at the Malibu Beach Inn has won six (6) consecutive Wine Spectator Awards. And while the wine menu is certainly all you would expect given the awards, what isn’t on the wine list will impress you. First, the wine list is certainly excellent with a nice balanced selection of New and Old World wines (heavier in California and Italy; an impressive rosé selection; while most bottles are the standard 750ml size, there are half bottles (375ml ) and large formats in each section) and certainly their by-the-glass program is with a hearty 6 oz. pour (most restaurants our 4.5-5 oz.). However, should you see something on the bottle list that piques your curiosity, each bottle on the list will be opened and served by the glass (with a minimum order of 2 glasses)! So if you really want to experience a glass of Dominus Estate Christian Moueix (2021 Wine Spectator No. 1 Wine), you can do so at CBC Malibu.

34 steps: Beach access, as we mentioned earlier, can be tricky in California, and Los Angeles is no exception. Santa Monica’s wide beaches are beautiful, but your walk from the hotel to the water can be 3 or 4 soccer fields. The Malibu Beach Inn is 34 steps away. 34 steps down their private stairs (which is grandfather’s side – you can’t build private stairs as a beach in Malibu) and you’re literally in the water. The proximity of the hotel is so close to the sea that you will know when the beach is available from the (daily) tide map. In some parts of the day the sea is below the hotel!

A taste of the Daylesford Spa in Malibu: The Bamford family has owned and operated the Daylesford Spa in the UK for many years. Her famous Bamford line of spas (and family name) will be a keepsake for those who visit. Malibu Beach Inn is the only hotel in North America that carries its line in guest rooms in all room categories for free. The shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, body lotion and ground soaps all have a wonderful geranium scent and are all made organically and biodynamically in the UK.

You actually change sheets – every day: Like most luxury hotels, the Malibu Beach Inn offers guests the option not to, but the age-old question in a hotel is whether or not to change sheets? (3) different linen colors! Every day you will be greeted with a new color from Bottle Green, Washed-Out Blue or Brilliant Yellow. The hotel uses the Bellino Fine Linens family hut from Italy.

Everything in the hotel has been built specifically for its place: With so many designers using manufacturing facilities around the world, Waldo Fernandez, the designer of the Malibu Beach Inn, decided that each guest room was custom built in the Los Angeles area. The bed, tables, chest of drawers and desk are made of Japanese-Scandinavian white oak – everything was handmade for each guest room. Mixed with soft gray and deep blue tones, the overall aesthetic is contemporary and yet comfortable.

No ordinary turndown: With many hotels foregoing nightly turndown service (even before the pandemic), the Malibu Beach Inn leans heavily on it and insists on maintaining service even during the year that is not to be named! In addition to the comfortable slippers, bed rugs, bathrobes and water, MBI offers a wonderful duo of chocolate truffles from Luxury Chocolatier Vosges. This is no ordinary “pillow treat” and if you cannot reach the hotel, you can order it at www.vosgeschocolate.com.

Yes Boss: In addition to each sea view seat (both inside and outside), the CBC Malibu restaurant at the Malibu Beach Inn has Top Chef France finalist David Fricaud as its head chef. Chef David’s mix of coastal California and Mediterranean cuisines coupled with his natural French technique make for some surprising dishes made with the best ingredients available.

Bigger is not always better: One of the biggest perks of the Malibu Beach Inn’s size (the oceanfront boutique hotel only has 47 rooms) is that this is of course suitable for smaller populations. No need to rush downstairs at sunset and put your book and towel on your sun lounger – it will be there when you are ready. And although the seaside restaurant is open to the public, hotel guests are always given preferential seating. Its size also gives the staff a unique ability to interact with their guests. As one of the leading hotels in the world, it boasts of consistently being in the top 10 for overall customer satisfaction. It was named the No. 1 Hotel in Southern California at the Conde Nast Reader’s Choice Awards and the No. 1 Boutique Hotel in North America at the World Travel Awards.
