- We learned on Friday that Chinatown’s Chung King Road is the insider tip for anyone wanting to visit “some of the city’s best small galleries.” Many of them now banded together to host a Chinatown First Fridays event that sees them all open simultaneously. “Participating galleries include the immersive Cakeland space; Charlie James Gallery, currently featuring a group show of 40+ Latinx artists; Tierra del Sol, a nonprofit that shows the works of artists with disabilities; and Noon Projects, now showcasing portraits from the Echo Park artist Matt Momchilov.” (Spectrum News 1)
- the Annual Festival of the Chariots Parade will cause some traffic snarls on Sunday. “Main Street will be closed to cars starting at 8AM on that Sunday, reopening as the parade passes, no later than 11:30AM.” the Parade starts at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and ends at Venice Beach. Expect “approximately 40,000 parade and festival participants.” (Main Street)
- What’s happening with the $82-million Los Angeles Valley College theater and media arts space? We learned on Thursday that since its groundbreaking in 2016, it has been behind schedule and over budget. “An independent arbitrator concluded in April that the Los Angeles Community College District was primarily at fault for the delays and violated state requirements for ‘good faith and fair dealing’ in construction contracts.” The contractor filed suit on Tuesday, alleging “fraud, corruption, and racketeering in conspiring to delay the theater’s construction so consultants could garner more billable hours.” (AOL)
- El Segundo based Beyond Meat announced layoffs on Thursday. Falling revenues will cost 4% of the company’s employees their jobs. “Beyond Meat President and CEO Ethan Brown said customers dealing with food price inflation traded down to cheaper store brands of plant-based meat or bought animal meat.” Actual ground beef costs around $4.90 per pound. The plant-based alternative from Beyond Meat retails for $8.35 per pound. (Patch)
- Mark your calendars! Dolly Shine, a new gay bar, could open within the next couple of weeks at 8737 Santa Monica Boulevard. It is taking over the space that the Gym Sportsbar used to occupy. “It’s going to be a chill gay, gay, gay bar. I want it to be a casual and super fun bar. It won’t be sports or down and dirty, which I love at Fubar, but great cocktail at an affordable price kind of place” the owner explained. (The Pride LA)
